Uninstalling an older version of Pearson's Crystal Data CD-ROM or DVD ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have already an older version of Pearson's Crystal Data CD-ROM/DVD (PCD) installed on your computer (a demo version or a special beta test version), you should first uninstall this old version before you install the latest version: - From the Windows "Start" menu, run "Programs" -> "Pearson's Crystal Data CD-ROM" -> "Uninstall Pearson's Crystal Data CD-ROM". 2. Installing Pearson's Crystal Data Demo Version ------------------------------------------------- Before you install and run the Pearson's Crystal Data (PCD) Demo Version, please check the following system requirements: - PC with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10, or 11 operating system (note: PCD does not run with Windows RT or Windows 10 "S" or Windows 10 in "S mode") - 2 GB of RAM (4 GB or more recommended) - 8 GB of free disk space - Graphics resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels with 32,768 colors ("High Color") If you have not already done so, please download the setup file from http://www.crystalimpact.com/download/pcd/demo/PCD-demo-setup-27.exe Note: On Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10, or 11 systems, administrator rights are required in order to be able to perform the installation! Afterwards, double-click on this file in the directory where you have saved it. The installation program will start automatically and lead you through the setup process. Once you have installed the program, the following documentation is available: In addition to the online help, a comprehensive manual (containing a tutorial as well as detailed information about the database details and concepts) is available in Acrobat Reader format (PDF). You can access the manual either from the menu ("Help-Tutorial"), from the Windows "Start" menu ("Start/Programs/Pearson's Crystal Data/Manual") or directly by double-clicking in the Windows Explorer on the "manual.pdf" file in the PCD program directory. Note: The manual uses A4 format. Another manual in US letter format is available from the Windows "Start" menu: "Start/Programs/Pearson's Crystal Data/Manual (US Letter)" 3. Preliminary Hints on Limitations (IMPORTANT!) ------------------------------------------------ This Pearson's Crystal Data (in short: "PCD") version is a demonstration version. The database contains only a small amount of data (appr. 2600 entries), with many of them being binary compounds. The full version of course contains much more data (Release 2007/8: appr. 150,000, Release 2008/9: appr. 165,000 entries, Release 2009/10: appr. 180,000 entries, Release 2010/11: appr. 197,000 entries, Release 2011/12: appr. 212,500 entries, Release 2012/13: appr. 227,000 entries, Release 2013/14: appr. 242,400 entries, Release 2014/15: appr. 258,500 entries, Release 2015/16: appr. 273,800 entries, Release 2016/17: appr. 288,850 entries, Release 2017/18: appr. 304,000 entries, Release 2018/19: appr. 319,000 entries, Release 2019/20: appr. 335,000 entries, Release 2020/21: appr. 350,000 entries, Release 2021/22: appr. 365,000 entries, Release 2022/23: appr. 380,000 entries, Release 2023/24: appr. 395,000 entries), both for binary and multinary compounds! 4. Installing Diamond Demonstration Version ------------------------------------------- Once you have installed the Pearson's Crystal Data software and database, we recommend to also install the Diamond demonstration version (at least if Diamond is not already present on your computer). Diamond is Crystal Impact's powerful software for crystal structure visualization. You can easily transfer crystal structure data and pictures from PCD to Diamond in order to create more elaborate and impressive crystal structure pictures. Before you install and run the Diamond demonstration version, you should check the following minimum system requirements: - Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10, or 11 operating system (note: does not run with Windows RT or Windows 10 "S" or Windows 10 in "S mode") - 1 GB of RAM - 3.8 GB of free disk space (6 GB during installation procedure) - Graphics resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels with 32,768 colors ("High Color"), 1280 x 800 pixels or more recommended If you have not already done so, please download the setup file "Diamond-4.m.n-Setup.exe" (where m and n are the current minor update numbers) from here: http://www.crystalimpact.com/diamond/download.htm (Note: A newer version 5 of Diamond will come in the later year 2023, with also a demonstration version available.) Afterwards, double-click on this file in the directory where you have saved it. The installation program will start automatically and lead you through the setup process. A comprehensive tutorial is available in Acrobat Reader format (PDF). We strongly recommend to work through the tutorial in order to learn about Diamond's most prominent features, so that you can get the most of it later on when you work on your own data. There is a special chapter "What's new for Diamond 3 users", which we recommend to all customers who have already worked with the previous version of Diamond. You can access the tutorial either from the menu ("Help-Tutorial"), by double-clicking in the Windows Explorer on the "tutorial.pdf" file in Diamond's program directory, or from the Windows Start menu ("Start/Programs/Diamond 4/Tutorial"). The Diamond demonstration version is identical with the full version except of the following restrictions: - No saving: Changes in structure documents cannot be saved in the original file formats of Diamond 3 (the Diamond Document format, "diamdoc") and the Diamond Structure File format ("DSF"), which has been used by earlier versions of Diamond. - Banner: A banner with "Diamond Demonstration Version" will be written into saved bitmaps, Windows Metafiles, and printouts. Once you have installed the Diamond software, we recommend to also install POV-Ray(TM) (at least if it is not already present on your computer): Download the file "povwin-3.7-agpl3-setup.exe" from http://www.crystalimpact.com/download/diamond4/povwin-3.7-agpl3-setup.exe Afterwards, double-click on the file you have downloaded, and follow the instructions given on the screen. If you are interested in purchasing a full version of Diamond, please have a look at http://www.crystalimpact.com/diamond/index.html or contact Crystal Impact directly (address see below). 5. Uninstalling --------------- If you would like to uninstall PCD, please open the "Control Panel" from the "Settings" folder in the Windows "Start" menu. Afterwards, double-click on "Software" (on some operating systems called "Add/Remove Programs) in order to bring up the normal Windows software installation dialog. In the list, please mark the program you would like to uninstall, then click "Change/Remove". As soon as the uninstall program has been opened, please click "Ok" in order to remove the program. The Diamond demonstration version can be uninstalled in a similar manner. 6. Support ----------------- i. Software In case of trouble when using PCD software, please pay attention to the following hints: - If you do not know how to operate in a dialog window, carefully read all information in the window. Make sure that you understand the meaning of the buttons, input fields, lists, etc. Look at the way several functions are grouped into frames and read the frame titles, too. - Press the F1 key and examine the help text. Check the help jumps, too, which are green blue (or purple, if already visited; default Internet Browser settings). - Look for appropriate keywords in the Help Index, and look for any related text on the Help Find tab. - If you do not know how a command in a pulldown menu operates, press the F1 key when the corresponding command is highlighted. This will open the help page for this command, where you can continue as mentioned above. - If you do not find a command, use the Help Index (Index tab on the PCD Application Help window) to get an alphabetic list of search items. Also visit the PCD Update Page at http://www.crystalimpact.com/pcd/update.htm. This page offers the latest software patches. If this page does not give you an answer or if the trouble is caused by an error in the software (a "bug"), contact the software developer Crystal Impact. Please describe how the bug can be reproduced as detailed as possible, and attach possibly required files! The easiest way to do this is to select the "Send queries..." command in the "Help" menu. In the dialog that opens, select "Software query". A new e-mail window will open in which you can now enter a detailed description of the problem or error you have encountered. Finally, send the e-mail as usual (e.g. by pressing the "Send" button). Alternatively, send an e-mail to: pcd-support@crystalimpact.com Or - if you are not connected to the Internet - send a fax to: ++49-228-9813644 Or write to: Crystal Impact H. Putz & K. Brandenburg GbR Kreuzherrenstrasse 102 D-53227 Bonn Germany ii. Data If you have questions or found errors in the Pearson's Crystal Data *data* (not the PCD software itself!), please contact the editor team by selecting the "Send queries..." command in the "Help" menu. In the dialog that opens, select "Data query". A new e-mail window will open where you can now enter a detailed description of the problem or error you have encountered. Finally, send the e-mail as usual (e.g. by pressing the "Send" button). 7.
